Riot Grrrl Mumma
::stream of consciousness::

posts pending that are swimming through my head as I yell as the dog to stop pleading his case to be let inside, chase the toddler to clean face/nose/bottom (toilet training joys) and strategies how to spend the last day of the weekend together as a family before the week splits us to work and early learning centre.

  • The one I promised people I’d recap by activism/ hacktivism
  • The one burning me up inside most work days as I commute to and from work that I dedicate to the late Elijah Rainbow and Brad Lees.
  • The one today sparked by one anecdote from an alleged ABA counselor that the Sunday Mail is running a double page on that I call #breastfeedingate

And as I’ve typed this I haven’t been called away from the computer and it then be later turned off, and my post lost. Amazing.

….so what this space, as I NEED to blog before I go postal.

Hands off my family LNP

Regardless of the turn out and whatever the media will say today was really special as I had by my side my amazing family- my wifey Bec, our wonderful gregarious daughter (Ms2), my Mother, my Mother-in-Law, Father-in-Law and his wife (who in years gone by would have been inside attending the conference).

Today outside the LNP State Conference protest as part of the FESTIVAL OF FIGHTBACK was a disappointingly small, yet loud protest action.

I saw a few of the old guard queer activists, which always makes for a good reunion!

Rally 1

A tweet I sent out this morning:

If my Mum could attend from VIC and my mum-in-law from Toowoomba you can get here from the Valley and West End!

Meeting with Waterford MP Mike Latter

Mike seemed genuine enough, sure he was naive as to how two women can make a baby and about same sex parenting but at least he was open and honest, asked questions and listened without judgement.

We spoke to him about presumption of parentage, Surrogacy and Civil Unions.

I was a bit nervous and came of a bit ranty at the start- I think more so as we were in Evan Moorhead’s former office where I had spent many weekends preparing before doorknocking, letter boxing and other aspects of a typical campaign. I was so proud of the way Bec took the lead, she calmly explained in simple heartfelt language the impacts changes are already causing and what proposed changes could mean for same sex families. Bec makes a brilliant lobbyist! Buy the end of the hour long meeting I had composed myself enough to articulate responses and through in some humour.

And the strangest thing happened- he was genuine when he said he wanted to catch up with us again, and meet Ms2, even have dinnerI guess this is what a former boss of mine had meant when he said I needed to ‘extend my hand across the aisle’.

Then Tuesday of the following week Mike calls from Parliament because he had to be the 1st one to pass on the good news

Mike Latter, Waterford MP raced between Parliament sittings on July 11th to call Bec & I to let us know that any changes to the Surrogacy Act will not affect the Status of Children and the presumption of parentage at all, retrospective and future children born of same sex parents.

He sounded so excited to tell me.

(I’m still skeptical)

I asked for it in writing (still waiting).

Still fighting

"This is not about politics – this is about people.
This is not about religion – this is about families.”

-Suzanne Michael

We’ve made an appointment to see our local MP Mike Latter Wednesday and will also bring him letters from our extended family. We’ve asked friends and family to lobby, wrote a personal account that’s been tweeted, retweeted and shared around Facebook, and I’ve gotten work colleagues involved too.

I am scared by the complacency I’ve encountered from a couple of people who blindly believe that things won’t change, that they cannot change and that I’m overreacting.  I wish I was overreacting! One of the comments was ‘Queensland on a whole has moved forward so much that they could not possibly do something so backward’. But they can, and they did by altering civil unions;

  • changing them from civil partnerships to registered relationships
  • removing the State based public aspects of celebrating them.

So I am pleading with you all not to shrug and think this will pass by.

Make no mistake this the most significant rollback of gay and lesbian rights by a government in the Western world, ever.

Urgent Action – Get involved

SOS to save same sex rights in QLD

This is a story from my partner Bec and I regarding the attacks by the LNP Government in Queensland;

Friends, I need your help urgently; we only have little over a week. Please read my story and then help me and my family to put an end to this. I am the mother of a 2 yr old little girl, she is my absolute world and I would lay down my life for her. The joy she has brought to my family is something I have never ever experienced; I never knew the power of a mother’s love until Scarlett came into our lives.

Last Thursday night at approx 10:40pm the new LNP govt announced in parliament that they will be removing the rights of my family and my child through way of the Surrogacy Act and the Status of Children Act. They intend to stop children born to lesbian mothers from having both mothers legally recognised as parents. It is unclear as yet whether this will be taken away for any children still to be born or whether this will also be taken retrospectively. Indications appear that the govt will also remove this retrospectively, which means that I will be forcibly removed as Scarlett’s parent. To say this is distressing is more than an understatement, I am devastated to my core.

The govt is also intending to make surrogacy to gays and lesbians (and single women) a criminal act and 3 years imprisonment. Mel and I had considered Mel carrying my biological child so Scarlett can have a sibling as it appears I have fertility issues, when this is passed in parliament, we would face criminal charges and 3 years jail if we did this. There are many many Qlders in the same position as us, some of whom as friends here on my FB. This is affecting not only the children and their parents, but grandparents, uncles, aunties, cousins and friends. We need to stop this right now.

Please, phone your state MP and request an urgent meeting with him/her. Tell them your position and how this is affecting every day people. If you voted LNP, tell them you didnt vote for this. Put your face to this issue, get your MP to look you in the eye and tell you their position on this. If you cant see them face to face, please email them, tell them personal stories. Talk to people, tell them what is happening in QLD! Speak out, I guarantee that if people knew this was happening they would be up in arms! We have just over a week to get this issue out EVERYWHERE! The govt will introduce this Bill at the next sitting on July 10 I believe so we must act NOW.

 If you cant get out and talk to your MPs and church leaders face to face please share this link to people and ask them to complete! Personal stories are important as well so make sure people include those :)
